Sagna says City’s slackers have paid a heavy price with back-to-back defeats after their stunning start to the Premier League season.

The City full-back, speaking after Saturday's 4-1 drubbing at Spurs, said: “Maybe we have shown too much confidence. I think we had to keep working hard if we wanted to stay on top.

“We know we have the quality players to make a difference, we know we are a good team, we know we can be champions, we know we can be competitive.

City started the season with five wins, yet defeats to West Ham and now Tottenham have meant Manchester United knocked them off the top.

They travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday for a vital Champions League game, but should have keeper Joe Hart back although injured Yaya Toure and David Silva could both miss out.
