The iconic boss believes that he can now focus on leading United to success following his decision to commit to a new deal after the collapse of his move to Real Madrid.

Ferguson believes that United are right back in the mix in the early stages after rivals Manchester City slumped to defeat last week, allowing United to close the gap.

"I think De Gea can win us the league," said Ferguson, speaking in Manchester to promote his new book Leading. 

"I think we're in a great position. Last week I was asked about this and I said Manchester City were the only team that hadn't lost a game.

Now they've lost a game, at home to West Ham, Arsenal have lost a game, Chelsea have lost a couple too.

"If United are there on New Year's Day, they have a chance.

We are in a good position because, City hadn't lost a game until last week and then United won at Southampton and the whole thing changes round. 

"Chelsea have lost a couple of games, Arsenal have lost a game, if you are there around New Year's Day then they will have a good chance."

Ferguson also praised the impact that Antony Martial has made in such a short space of time. 

The 74-year-old claimed that the striker "can be anything" after scoring four goals in his first four outings in a Manchester United shirt.
