The 16-year-old has been on trial with the club for the last few months, impressing sufficiently to earn a contract, report the Manchester Evening News.
He is currently under contract at Serie D side Forli, and a compensation fee will be decided by FIFA, due to his tender years.
Ercolani
has posted several pictures on his Instagram account of himself at
United's Carrington training complex in recent months, including one
alongside Under-21s goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara.
United
have brought a number of Italian teenagers to the club this century.
Giuseppe Rossi arrived in Manchester from Parma in 2004 before Roman duo
Davide Petrucci and Federico Macheda arrived in 2008.

his compatriot, Alberto Massacci, was plagued by injuries at the club.
