Allardyce has had to give up his beloved EastEnders, Corrie and Emmerdale because he has been poring over so many DVDs of potential targets.

Trying to find new players to help Sunderland’s desperate relegation fight has turned into a real soap opera and he will be glad when the window slams shut next Monday.

“You’re never calm in the transfer window, it’s a horrid time for everybody, but even worse when you’re in the position we’re in,” said the Sunderland boss.

“I can’t even watch my favourites on TV. No EastEnders, Coronation Street, no Emmerdale either. I’m not bothered about missing Hollyoaks though!”

Allardyce has signed German defender Jan Kirchhoff and Senegal striker Dame N’Doye and now wants Swansea’s Andre Ayew.

The effort by Afobe was his second for the Cherries in three games – on top of his 10 for Wolves before his £10million switch – and he wants to emulate Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo by proving he can make the step up from the Championship.

“I look at the likes of Ighalo and Vardy, they’ve scored goals in the Championship like me and made their mark at the highest level,” said the former Arsenal trainee.

“They’ve stepped up and are good role models for me. I’m young, I’m English and I believe I have all the tools to be a top player.

“I feel I belong in the Premier League, but I’ve got to keep proving it.”
