Maybe he knew a 1 -0 defeat at West Brom was on the cards. Maybe he knew Juan Mata (JUAN MATA!) would get himself sent off.
Maybe he knew that his fellow Dutchman would desperately need something - anything - to distract the angry Man United fans who would once again be baying for blood after yet another hapless defeat.
Maybe
his outrageous choice of footwear at The Hawthorns was simply a
diversionary tactic, designed to take the heat off his boss as the world
focused on his ludicrous boots.

A lovely thought, and no doubt his mum will have been delighted by the gesture.
